Canon Inc. began in Tokyo as Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory in 1933 and was officially incorporated as Precision Optical Industry Co., Ltd. in 1937. The name “Canon” emerged after their prototype 35mm camera, the Kwanon, in 1934, and was later adopted as the company trademark in 1935.

Canon earned global recognition with early innovations such as Japan’s first indirect X-ray camera (1940) and the speed-light synchronized 35mm flash/shutter camera, the IVSb, in 1952. Canon entered the office equipment market in the 1960s, expanded into copiers, calculators, and laser printers, and established a strong position in imaging machines and business products throughout the 1970s and beyond.
